What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide which naturally occurs in the body’s connective tissues, with more than 50% of it being found in the skin. It has an important role in cushioning and lubricating the skin and keeping it hydrated. In fact, one molecule of hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1000x its weight in water.
As we age, our body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid falls. Hydrated skin looks fuller, plumper, firmer and has a luminous glow, whereas dehydrated skin (which occurs as hyaluronic acid levels drop) can look dull, lacklustre and more slack. As our skin loses its suppleness, fine lines and wrinkles can become more apparent.
How do Dermal Fillers work?
Dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid and work by attracting and holding water. Injecting dermal fillers boosts the skins supply of hyaluronic acid. They are commonly used to give a more youthful look to patients by softening and contouring lines, folds and wrinkles as well as replacing lost volume in the face which is associated with ageing.
The fillers we use are temporary and the effects will naturally and gradually wear off between 8-12 months after treatment.
Dr Deepa believes that a soft, natural restoration is the best outcome for her patients and the aim is for you to leave the clinic feeling refreshed and rejuvenated and not artificially “puffed up”.
